Yes, I know Old Sturbridge Village is the place kids go on their school trips but, I love it and if anything is going to ignite the tired spark of holiday cheer in me, it’s their wonderful Christmas By Candlelight event. The whole village is open as usual but because the event starts at 4pm, you wander around in the dark. The streets are lit with candle lanterns, houses decorated with swags and wreaths. There’s a bonfire in the center of the green with benches all around, warm yourself there with a hot cider (with or without rum). A highlight for me is the Punch and Judy puppet show but there’s also carol singers, Victorian Christmas treats, music and horse-drawn carriage rides. Open Friday to Sunday evenings in December.
